Well known restaurant owner Cathal Armstrong and family have opened another venture, restoring an old grain warehouse on the Alexandria waterfront. The restaurant is an upscale beer joint, with exotic beer cocktails, burgers (yes, burgers) and lots of loud music on weekend nights.
I find people tend to be embarrassed visiting a fast food restaurant. Nobody wants to admit they eat there knowing there is a sleaze factor involved. I try to avoid such restaurants as I am typically not satisfied with what you get and I find the facilities uninviting for dining. And if you have the audacity to voice a complaint, you typically are faced with an acne scarred teenager who looks at you like you’re a creature from another planet.
The cleanly, dinner around me room in the restaurant doesn’t focus on extravagant decor. They are more concerned with the reason you came in the first place – for the food. When you first walk through the door, most of the time you’ll be greeted by the owner, who stands behind the counter, ringing up orders and overseeing the kitchen. His broken Italian accent makes you feeling like you are really in Italy. So does the rest of the staff, many who came straight from Italy, and the meals, whose recipes originate in Italy.
There are a number of drawbacks, however. Firstly, during peak dinner times, the wait for a table can be excrutiatingly long (think one to two hours). On weekend nights while the college is in session, the bar can be completely inaccessible. This is due both to the proximity to the college and to the small size of the bar. Other bars close to the college, such as the Flying Bull Saloon and the Blue Parrot Bistro, don’t have this problem as much due to their size and efficiency.
Nevertheless, Mangiamo does serve beef and pork dishes as well, so you will not just be tied down to seafood. Unless, you are like me and love seafood that much. If you do decide to visit this lovely Italian Ristorante, be sure to try the black and White Striped Lobster Ravioli, it is to die for. One quick side note is that if you have a party of seven or more, the restaurant will add an 18% service charge. Fair enough considering the taste and quality of the food and if you wish to avoid this charge just split your party into smaller groups.
